Deer Cam for 2/20-2/26

We only had one deer pic this week. It was encouraging to not see dogs and to see a small herd grazing through. I'll have to put down some more corn this week to get them used to paying regular visits to this area.

For next week, I've posted the cam overlooking the watering hole. There's always lots of tracks, so it will be interesting to see whats actually going through there.

The date stamp is screwed up on this one because I forgot to reset the date after changing the batteries. For how much this thing cost, you'd think it would have a small onboard battery to hold the time and date.

Tearing down the old house

The time seemed right to finally tear down the old, blown down house on the prop. It was fun to show people, but it was on prime space, and the time seemed right to finally deal with it.

Here are some before shots documenting how it looked as we first found it.

At this point, we'd torn it down to floor joists. Notice that they are just cedar posts laid directly on the ground. They were in surprisingly good shape for sitting there at least 40+ years.

We threw all the rotted wood onto our burn pile. There wasn't much to salvage. We did find some interesting old beer cans though. They were a brand called Barbarossa from Cincinnati. They were so old that they didn't even have a pull top. Just triangular holes where they'd used a can opener to open it. I checked the Internet and found that pull-tabs weren't invented until 1962. That fact, along with the size of the cedars around the house (as well as no sign of electricity) would date this from at least the 50's or early 60's, although it could be older. However, I don't think it would be much older than the 50's. I don't think the cans would have lasted that long.

We were able to salvage quite a few cedar poles that were used for rafters and uprights, but the stack below was all of the milled lumber we were able to save.

Deer feeder and Cam report for last week

I was disappointed to see how few deer (in fact, none) went into the old clearing where I had first placed my tree stand. I had a one series of shots, of which one might have been a tail. I'm thinking that the deer might have not like stepping over the little sink hole fissure which cuts across the trail leading into the clearing.

This week, I built and installed my new deer feeder. It's basically just a 4" pipe with a notch cut it in and placed a couple inches above the ground so a mound builds up underneath it. As the deer eat, a little more spills out. I'll have to keep an eye on it to see how well it meters out the food.

Here's my work crew getting ready to go down and install the feeder.

It was pretty cold that day.

The white stuff on the ground is the mineral lick that we spread around to get the deer to get used to coming into this clearing. I've also placed the trail cam on this site, so we should have some good pics for next week!

Deer cam report

Camera is posted in the salt lick clearing, in front of the tree stand, looking onto the trail coming in from the water puddle.

Burning off cedars

Spent the weekend burning off piles of cedars. It seems like a never ending task. However, I'm getting pretty good at it. I can get them started and burned completely to ash in a couple hours.
